The essence of original art...

November 12, 2018

You have great reasons to invest in original art...

Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life” (Pablo  Picasso)

They say: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” (Margaret Wolfe Hungerford) and the same is true for any artwork.  The say: ‘A picture is worth a thousand words” (Fred R. Barnard).  Such embellishments on the walls of your home or office boasts a unique style, an air of authenticity and has the potential to become a talking point for visitors, family or even add to your own internal dialogue.

Think about the last time you acquired a work of art – was it because you were intrigued by the beautiful shades and blends of colours, connected with the interesting textures and materials, identified with the style as it related to your home décor, had a special connection with the artist or subject matter, or evoked a response to a personal passion or expression.

That same artwork has the ability to silently ‘speak’ and influence the ‘mood’ in a room. This is seen when artwork generates an emotional response – an experience – or some type of engagement.  This would be considered a sign of ‘good’ art… And good art becomes exceptional art when the emotional response it achieves develops and grows to an even deeper level of engagement - powerfully connecting you to a time, place, person, or story through the creative expression.

As a contrast to original creations, mass produced artworks sold in bulk at the corner discount store just doesn’t have the ability provide the connection and response – the delight and powerful statements generated by original artwork seems to fade in the duplication process of factory production lines.

Therefore a person could say that the art you have around you makes a statement about you – it says who you are, it reflects your personality, individuality, style and taste. I would be bold enough to say that these pieces are like ‘alternative’ mirrors… personalized ‘neon signs’ saying: “Look! This is who I am… This is what is important to me… This gives me ‘life’…”

Your interest in and support of original art has a further reach than just your own home or office, it also supports the artist, encouraging them to continue to delve into and share their wells of creativity, imagination and ingenuity.  It provides recognition and credibility to the investment in their artistic skills and abilities, resources and materials – and empowers them to continue to create.

In addition, the legacy of support in and for the arts by our community and government institutions highlights the priorities of that community and develops cultural artefacts for the future, highlighting our generation’s interests, passions and personality.

So next time you have a look at a piece of original art you really like, I challenge you to consider what distinct message that artwork says about you because of your connection with it… and consider what it would look like on the walls in your own home or office… Yes… I challenge you to consider buying or commissioning your own artwork that makes a statement about you!
